Front-lit letters push light through a translucent acrylic face, producing maximum daytime-to-night legibility at distance — the default for retail. Halo (reverse) lit letters have opaque metal faces and project light backward onto the wall, creating a silhouette glow. Halo lighting reads as more premium and architectural but requires a light-colored, flat mounting surface and a 1.5″–2″ standoff to develop the halo evenly.

In most North County jurisdictions a monument over 6 feet requires an engineered footing 24–36 inches deep, sized for a 95–110 mph exposure-C wind load. The footing schedule is derived from the sign’s sail area and the soil report. We submit wet-stamped calculations with the permit set so plan check clears on the first pass rather than the third.

Four requirements govern most citations: raised characters between 5/8″ and 2″ tall, Grade 2 braille positioned 3/8″ below the lowest tactile line, a non-glare finish with at least 70% light-reflectance contrast between characters and background, and mounting on the latch side of the door with the baseline 48″–60″ above the finished floor. Pictograms require a 6″ minimum clear field. Decorative typefaces are prohibited on tactile copy.

Legibility scales at roughly one inch of letter height per thirty feet of viewing distance. A driver at 55 mph needs six seconds of read time — about 480 feet — which demands 16-inch copy minimum. Height is then driven by sightline obstruction, not by the copy itself: the cabinet must clear tree canopy and adjacent rooflines at the approach angle, which is why we model the sightline before drawing the structure.

Divide the minimum viewing distance in feet by ten to get a workable pitch in millimeters. A display read from 100 feet performs well at 10mm; a drive-by sign viewed from 300 feet can use 16mm at a fraction of the cost. Buying a finer pitch than your sightline requires is the single most common overspend in digital signage — the resolution is invisible from the road but doubles the price.

Brushed stainless reads as permanent and hides fingerprints, making it the default for corporate and medical lobbies. Painted acrylic delivers exact brand color at a third of the cost and a tenth of the weight, which matters on drywall without blocking. Brass has returned in hospitality, but it patinas — specify a lacquer if you want the original finish held.

Cast vinyl with a UV overlaminate holds seven to eight years on vertical panels in Southern California; horizontal surfaces — hood and roof — fade first and typically need replacement at year four to five. Washing by hand rather than a brush tunnel roughly doubles the practical life of the printed graphic.
