Custom Dimensional Lettering & 3D Building Signs

Add Depth & Permanence to Your Brand

Dimensional letters are the standard for professional, architectural signage. Unlike flat panel signs, these individual letters have physical depth and shadow, creating a permanent, high-end look on any building facade. Whether for a corporate office, educational facility, or retail storefront, dimensional lettering communicates stability and quality without the complexity of internal illumination.

Featured Project: Garfield Montessori

Location: Escondido, CA

For Garfield Montessori, the goal was to create a welcoming yet institutional presence that could stand up to the elements. We utilized 2-inch thick High-Density Urethane (HDU) to achieve the substantial look of architectural stone without the weight.

  • Fabrication: Routed in-house on our Laguna Swift CNC for crisp, consistent edges matching the school’s serif typeface.
  • Finishing: High-contrast automotive-grade paint applied to ensure legibility against the light stucco exterior.
  • Installation: Mounted using blind studs for a clean, “floating” appearance with no visible fasteners.

Material Science: Selecting the Right Substrate

The All-Purpose Powerhouse: High-Density Urethane (HDU)

HDU is the industry gold standard for dimensional signage due to its incredible versatility and precision. Unlike natural materials, this closed-cell substrate is completely waterproof, rot-proof, and engineered to last for decades in the Southern California sun.

  • Unlimited 3D Shapes & Geometries Because HDU is grainless, it can be machined into complex three-dimensional shapes that are impossible with wood. We use our CNC router to create deep bevels, prismatic faces, and intricate sculptural elements with perfect smoothness.
  • Transformative Finishes Through different machining and painting techniques, HDU can be made to look like almost any material. A high-gloss automotive-grade paint can give it the appearance of polished metal or smooth composite, while texturing can mimic the look of architectural stone or sandblasted redwood.
  • Superior Paint Adhesion and Durability Natural wood expands and contracts with moisture, which eventually causes paint to crack and peel. HDU is thermally stable and 100% moisture-proof; this prevents the substrate from “moving,” ensuring that your custom paint finish remains bonded and vibrant for years longer than traditional timber.
  • Technical Specs We typically utilize 15lb or 20lb density HDU. This provides the ideal balance of impact resistance for exterior building signs and the structural integrity required for large-scale architectural lettering.

Versatile & Efficient: Foamed PVC (Palight)

Foamed PVC, often referred to by the leading brand name Palight, is an economical and highly versatile material for both interior and exterior dimensional letters. It provides a smooth, consistent surface that is ideal for vibrant paint finishes and sharp, CNC-routed edges.

Cost-Effective Durability We recommend foamed PVC when a project requires significant depth and professional aesthetics but needs to remain budget-conscious. It offers the same precision-routed look as more expensive substrates while remaining easy to handle and install.

Exceptional Versatility Palight is a lightweight yet rigid material that can be easily routed into complex shapes. While it is a go-to choice for high-end interior lobby signs, its UV-resistant properties make it suitable for many exterior applications when properly finished.

Smooth Surface for Premium Finishes Unlike other substrates that may have a slight texture, Palight offers a glass-smooth surface. This makes it the perfect candidate for high-gloss automotive-grade paints, allowing us to achieve a modern, “liquid metal” or “high-luster plastic” look that matches your brand’s exact color specifications.

The Smart Alternative to Traditional Plastics Palight outperforms standard plastics in signage because it is engineered for stability. It resists many common chemicals and is fire-retardant, making it a safe and durable option for public buildings, schools, and professional offices.

Flat Cut Metal

Solid plate aluminum (5052 Marine Grade) cut via waterjet. Extremely durable. Available in brushed, polished, or painted finishes.

Acrylic

Laser-cut with flame-polished edges. Perfect for high-gloss interior lobby signs or sleek exterior branding.

Cast Metal

Molten bronze or aluminum poured into molds. Creates deep, prismatic profiles seen on banks and government buildings.

Technical Installation & Mounting Methods

1. Stud Mounting (Blind Stud)

Threaded metal studs are drilled into the back of the letter and set into corresponding holes in the wall filled with silicone. Best for: Stucco, brick, or stone.

2. Pad Mounting (Stand-offs)

Letters are installed with spacers to “float” the sign off the wall. This creates a natural drop shadow that increases readability and depth.

3. Flush Mount (VHB + Silicone)

For smooth surfaces like glass or interior drywall. We use industrial 3M VHB tape combined with structural silicone for a permanent bond.

Design & Finishes

We engineer your signage to match your corporate identity guidelines perfectly.

  • Precision Paint Matching: We use the Matthews Paint System (automotive-grade polyurethane) to match any Pantone (PMS) color code.
  • Typographic Integrity: Our CNC routing process captures the nuance of your specific font family, ensuring 100% fidelity to your design file.

Permitting for Non-Illuminated Signs

Even though dimensional letters do not have internal lighting, they typically require a city permit.

  • Zoning Compliance: Cities like Escondido and San Marcos have specific Sign Ordinances dictating allowed square footage.
  • Structural Safety: We provide the necessary installation details to satisfy city planning departments.
  • The ISS Advantage: We handle the entire permitting package—drawings, applications, and inspections for the Cities of Vista, San Marcos, Escondido and that of Greater San Diego, Riverside and Orange County

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do dimensional letters last?

With proper materials like HDU or Aluminum and automotive-grade paint, these signs typically last 10+ years with minimal maintenance. Even in the wettest areas

Can you install on glass?

Yes. We use a specialized “flush mount” technique with VHB tape and structural silicone to adhere letters to glass entryways without drilling.

What is the lead time?

Typical production time is 3-4 weeks from permit approval, depending on the complexity of the material and finish.
