What is FCO? Understanding Flat Cut Out Letters
If you have been looking for building signs, you have probably seen the term “FCO” on quotes or architectural diagrams. In the sign industry, we use acronyms constantly, but for a business owner, it can be confusing.
Here is the simple breakdown: FCO stands for Flat Cut Out.
It refers to individual letters or logos that are cut from a flat sheet of material (like metal or acrylic) and mounted to a wall. Unlike “Channel Letters,” which are hollow cans that light up from the inside, FCO letters are solid, flat, and rely on external lighting or their own dimensional depth to stand out.
Common Materials for FCO Letters
Because these letters are cut from flat sheets using our CNC routers or lasers, we can fabricate them from almost anything. Here are the top 3 materials we use at Innovative Sign Systems:
- Acrylic: The most versatile option. It comes in many standard colors, or we can paint it to match your exact brand colors. It has a glossy, glass-like edge that looks very high-end.
- Aluminum: The most durable option. Perfect for outdoor signs in San Diego because it won’t rust. We can brush the metal for a silver finish or paint it.
- PVC / Foam: The budget-friendly option. These are lightweight and great for interior lobby signs, but we generally don’t recommend them for long-term outdoor use in harsh sun.
How Are They Mounted? (Flush vs. Standoffs)
The “magic” of FCO letters is often in how we install them. We usually use a method called “Stud Mounting.”
- Flush Mount: We apply adhesive and studs (pins) to the back of the letter and push it tight against the wall. This looks clean and traditional.
- Standoff (Spacer) Mount: We slide spacers over the studs so the letters “float” off the wall by 1/2 inch or more. This creates a natural shadow behind the letters, giving your sign more depth and readability—especially when the sun hits it.
Why Choose FCO Letters?
- Classy Aesthetic: They look architectural and permanent.
- Cost-Effective: Because they don’t require internal LED wiring like channel letters, they are often more affordable.
- Versatility: We can cut letters as small as 2 inches or as tall as 4 feet.
