Sign Categories

Innovative Sign Systems supplies all three major MUTCD sign categories for municipalities, departments of transportation, contractors, sign shops, and distributors throughout California and beyond.

Regulatory Signs (R-Series)

Stop signs, yield signs, speed limit signs, turn restrictions, and the full range of R-series MUTCD regulatory signs. Every sign is manufactured on high-grade reflective aluminum to federal and California DOT standards.

Construction & Work Zone Signs (W-Series / TC)

Road Work Ahead, Lane Closed, Flagger, Detour, and all work zone warning and traffic control signs for construction, maintenance, and utility projects. Available in standard MUTCD designs or custom configurations.

Guide Signs (D-Series)

Destination, street name, exit, motorist services, and recreational interest signs. We also offer custom city logos, contractor branding, and non-standard informational signs for municipalities and private clients.

Reflective Sheeting Options

All signs are available in four grades of retroreflective sheeting. The right grade depends on your posted speed limit, sign type, and jurisdiction requirements. We help you spec correctly — contact us if you’re unsure.

GradeStandardMin. RA ValueBest For
Engineer Grade (EG)ASTM D4956 Type IRA ≥ 70Lower-speed, lower-priority locations. ~7–10 year service life.
EG Prismatic (EGP)ASTM D4956 Type IIIRA ≥ 95Improved nighttime performance over standard EG.
High Intensity Prismatic (HIP)ASTM D4956 Type IVRA ≥ 250High-speed arterials and highways. Widely specified by California DOT.
Diamond Grade DG3ASTM D4956 Type XIRA ≥ 1000School zones, freeway signs, critical safety locations. Longest service life.

Specification note: FHWA’s MUTCD requires all traffic control signs on public roads to maintain minimum retroreflectivity levels throughout their service life. California follows the CA MUTCD (maintained by Caltrans), which includes state-specific requirements beyond the federal standard. We can help you confirm the correct grade for your project.

Aluminum Sign Blanks

Our aluminum sign blanks are the substrate behind every durable traffic sign. Cut, punched, and finished to exacting standards — ready for retroreflective sheeting and long-term outdoor exposure.

  • Premium aluminum alloy for strength, light weight, and corrosion resistance
  • Smooth satin finish — ideal surface for retroreflective sheeting and graphics
  • Pre-punched 3/8″ mounting holes for fast, hassle-free installation
  • Safety-radius corners reduce risk during handling and field installation
  • Available in every MUTCD shape: octagon, rectangle, diamond, pentagon, and more
  • Custom sizes cut to your exact specifications — no minimum order

Sign Posts & Rivets

A sign is only as reliable as what holds it up. Our MUTCD-compliant sign posts are precision-engineered for fast installation and long-term stability in demanding California roadway conditions.

  • Available in U-Channel, square tube, and round post profiles
  • Galvanized or powder-coated finishes for corrosion resistance
  • Precision-punched for secure, code-compliant mounting
  • Meets federal MUTCD standards for traffic safety installations

Rivets and mounting hardware also available.

Crosscade™ Pedestrian Crosswalk Signs

The Crosscade™ is a purpose-built portable pedestrian crosswalk sign system designed for uncontrolled and mid-block crossings. Its tall, narrow vertical panel maximizes sign face in a compact, stable footprint — no tools, no hardware, no setup time.

Displays State Law “STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS WITHIN CROSSWALK” messaging in compliance with California Vehicle Code requirements.

Two sizes available:

  • 12″W × 36″H
  • 12″W × 24″H

Ideal for school zones, parks, shopping centers, downtown corridors, and any high-pedestrian-traffic location.

Overlaminate Film – Protect Your Signs

Your signs are an investment. Overlaminate film adds a protective layer over retroreflective sheeting that guards against the most common causes of premature sign failure — extending service life and cutting replacement costs.

  • Anti-graffiti: Vandalism wipes clean without damaging the sign face
  • UV protection: Prevents fading and retroreflectivity loss from sun exposure
  • Scratch & chemical resistance: Stands up to road spray, de-icing salt, and abrasion
  • Weather resistance: Rated for extreme heat, cold, rain, and California’s coastal environments
  • Optically clear: Compatible with all retroreflective sheeting grades — visibility unaffected

Easy to apply in the shop or field. Reduces total cost of sign ownership.

Sign Charts & Reference Documents

We host both the California and Federal sign charts for easy reference. Use these to identify the correct sign type, designation, size, and reflective grade for any application.

  • View California Sign Chart → — Covers all CA MUTCD modifications, CVC-referenced signs, and California-specific designs including school crossing and crosswalk signs
  • View Federal MUTCD Sign Chart → — The FHWA national standard for traffic control device design, application, and placement on all U.S. public roads

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MUTCD and who must comply with it? The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), published by FHWA, is the national standard for all traffic control devices on U.S. public roads. Compliance is required by federal law (23 CFR 655) for all public road authorities — state DOTs, counties, cities, and municipalities. California follows the CA MUTCD, maintained by Caltrans, which incorporates additional state-specific requirements.

What reflective sheeting grade do I need? It depends on sign type, posted speed, and your jurisdiction’s specs. HIP is commonly required for regulatory and warning signs on roads 35 mph or above. Diamond Grade DG3 is required or strongly recommended for school zones, high-speed stop signs, and freeway applications. Contact us and we’ll help you spec the right grade.

Does California have its own sign standards? Yes. California follows the CA MUTCD (administered by Caltrans), which adopts all federal MUTCD requirements and adds California-specific signs and modifications required by the California Vehicle Code — including unique school crossing signs, “STATE LAW” crosswalk signs, and California-specific speed zone signage.

What aluminum substrate do MUTCD signs use? Standard traffic signs use aluminum alloy blanks, most commonly .080″ or .100″ gauge. Aluminum gives you the right combination of strength, light weight, corrosion resistance, and reflective sheeting adhesion. We offer all standard MUTCD shapes in stock and custom sizes, pre-punched and ready to apply.

Can I order custom signs not listed in the MUTCD? Yes. We produce custom reflective signs, decals, and graphics — including city logos, contractor branding, non-standard messaging, and custom sizes. Signs installed on public roads must still comply with applicable MUTCD requirements for color, legend, and retroreflectivity. We’ll make sure your custom signs check all the boxes.
