FireKeepers Casino Hotel in Battle Creek, Michigan just unveiled a new digital marquee that stops traffic on I-94: 99 feet, 6 inches tall, with a Samsung LED display measuring roughly 36 feet wide by 48 feet high and a 10.4 mm pixel pitch. Metro Signs and Lighting led the build, coordinating structural, electrical, and civil subcontractors to get nearly 1.5 million pixels in the air safely. It’s an extreme example, but the engineering questions behind it are the same ones we walk through with every digital sign client — just at a very different scale.

Pixel pitch is about viewing distance, not bragging rights

Pixel pitch — the distance between LED pixels — determines how close someone needs to stand before the image looks sharp instead of grainy. A 10 mm pitch reads cleanly from a highway at 60 mph; the same pitch on a storefront sign viewed from a sidewalk would look noticeably coarse. Most of our clients don’t need interstate-scale hardware, but they do need a pitch matched to their actual viewing distance: a drive-thru menu board, a monument sign on a 45 mph arterial, and a lobby directory all call for different specs. Buying finer pixel pitch than you need just inflates cost; buying coarser pitch than you need gives you a sign that looks blurry from the one distance that matters.

The structure matters as much as the screen

A sign that size needs real engineering behind it — footings, wind load calculations, electrical capacity, and sign-off from more than one trade. Smaller digital signs scale that same discipline down, but it doesn’t disappear: a monument-mounted LED display still needs a structural review, a dedicated circuit, and a jurisdiction that signs off on brightness and, in many Southern California cities, on-site photocell dimming or curfew hours. Skipping that step is the most common reason a digital sign installation stalls after the hardware has already been ordered.

Whether you’re planning something closer to a storefront display than a 99-foot marquee, the questions are the same: how far away will people actually be standing (or driving), and does the structure underneath the screen match what the display needs to do. We work through both before a digital sign design ever gets finalized.
