San Diego, CA – What Does UL-48 Certification Mean for Illuminated Business Signs?

When you’re getting quotes for a new illuminated sign — channel letters, a lighted cabinet, an LED monument sign — one question worth asking every sign company is whether their signs are UL-48 certified. Most business owners have never heard the term. Here’s why it matters and what to look for.

What UL-48 Actually Is

UL-48 is the safety standard published by Underwriters Laboratories for electric signs. When a sign manufacturer is UL-48 certified, their facility, processes, and finished products have been evaluated and listed to meet that standard — covering wiring methods, insulation, grounding, component ratings, and the integrity of the finished electrical assembly. The goal is to ensure an illuminated sign doesn’t create a fire, shock, or electrical hazard.

Why Your Landlord or City May Require It

Many commercial leases contain a clause requiring that illuminated signage be UL-listed, protecting the property owner from liability. Local building departments and AHJs in San Diego County may also require a UL listing as part of sign permit approval. If a sign is installed without the listing and the inspector or property manager later requires it, the sign may need to come down or be reworked — at the tenant’s or contractor’s expense.

What It Looks Like in Practice

A UL-listed sign carries a UL label — usually inside the cabinet or on the back of the sign housing — with a file number verifiable in UL’s database. Not every sign company holds this listing in-house. Many outsource illuminated sign fabrication to third parties, meaning the local shop may not be able to verify the listing at all.
